Koh Ma & The Relentless Call of the Massage

It’s one of those intensely sparkly days. Sun shining high in the sky. Rays of heat and light beam down on everything below, electrifying the water molecules. Shimmer, sparkle, shine.

My travel buddy and I ventured up north to Koh Ma, a tiny island just off the coast of Koh Phangan. Two opposing currents meet to form a sandbar connecting Koh Phangan to Koh Ma.

Coral reef surrounds the sandy bridge and island with heaps of sea cucumbers visible on the ocean floor. Strange grey and black snake-like things. Not what I’d want on my salad!

I didn’t get a picture of Koh Ma, but I did get a half hour foot massage. After 6 miles of walking the hilly island roads today, it was time. As if I need an excuse…

During every massage I’ve graciously received in Thailand, I’ve had the same thought: I need to write a post encouraging people to get more massages. Now I’m finally doing it!

Get a massage. Seriously.

Humans need loving touch every single day.

Go to a professional, exchange with a friend or your partner, or even use your own hands to massage yourself. Golly, it doesn’t have to be complicated.

I’ve had another recurring thought while receiving massages here: I need one every day. Haha. This makes me giggle.

Massages are much more affordable in Thailand than in America.

Depending where you are, they can be as inexpensive as 160 baht per hour (less than $5/hour). So it is possible to figure them generously into the travel budget.

Places to receive massages are more frequent than fast food restaurants and gas stations along busy stretches of American highways. They are everywhere!

Massage is available at parks, beaches, lakes, hotels, and all along the road.

Spas range in fancy-ness.

In my experience, you’re just as likely to get a good massage in one of the more basic set-ups with Whinny the Pooh flooring as in the more upscale spas with complimentary cucumber, lemongrass, and roselle foot baths.

The Thai are really onto something, and I think the West has a lot to learn from this culture.

Show your body some love, and get a massage today!
