Ugly Smoothie Recipe: Enzyme Boost

Sometimes I make an ugly smoothie…

Lately, many of my smoothies have been ugly, because I have been adding barley grass juice powder to them.

Barley grass juice powder is an amazing source of:

calcium, magnesium, potassium, enzymes including the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), easily absorbable proteins, beta carotene, chlorophyll, fiber, iron, vitamin K, vitamin C, riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3) thiamine (B1), vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin B6, pyridoxine (B6), copper, zinc, essential fatty acids including linolenic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid, as well as trace minerals.


Barley grass juice powder has a rich dark green color that when combined with certain colored fruits turns your smoothie all ugly-looking.

But, that’s ok…

Cuz, it still tastes great.

And, it’s SUPER nutritious!

Here’s An Ugly Smoothie Recipe For You!



  1. Place all ingredients in blender.
  2. Blend until smooth and creamy.

Recommendations For Your Dosha:

Vata: All these ingredients work for you. Enjoy! Try to use fresh, not frozen, pineapple. If using frozen, let it thaw fully. If using refrigerated oranges or pineapple, pull them out of the fridge to warm to room temperature before you make the recipe. Try to drink it right away (taking your time, of course), rather than storing it in the fridge.

Pitta: These ingredients work for you too. Just make sure your pineapple is sweet and ripe. This is light, cooling, and hydrating for you, loaded with sweet carbs to help you feel energized and vibrant.

Kapha: Oranges and pineapple are typically on the no-no list for you, BUT see how you respond to them. They are light, sweet, and hydrating. You may be a-OK! Same tips that I wrote for vata also apply to you to minimize the cooling effect of this recipe. Feel free to add in extra dark leafy greens to this recipe to help balance blood sugar.
